Film making is truly a process that requires a physical interaction in order to learn and understand it. This book, great in concept, is hard to really grasp when it involves a process that you really need to see visually in order to understand how it works.
The author did a good job of explaining what some of the most basic and commonly used cuts are. If only for that reason this editnig is a good basis to start from. Throughout the book he provides examples of what those cuts look like using pictu Film making is truly a process that chander a physical interaction in order to learn and understand it.

Throughout the book he provides examples of what those cuts look like using pictures from movies. If this was an ebook and the examples he provided were interactive then this book would be one that every film editor would need to study carefully but since it is not an interactive book, it’s difficult at times to understand the most advanced editing concepts.
That is where this book falls short, for the basic cuts and transition, this book is good at but once you get into the special effects cuts it’s difficult to see what the cut really looks like in action. Film is something you have to physically experience in order to understand it, including all it’s other parts, like editing, sound, and fi,m effects.
Editing is the glue that makes the movie work, once you have your skeleton of how the movie should look then you can start adding in everything else, this is why editing is such an important job. If iflm are just starting out tael film editing or looking to edit your own movie for free this book will help you get started. Once you understand the concept it’s important to start applying them right away with footage that you can edit over and over again just for practice. A good way to really learn editing with all the concepts cahndler to go out and film with your friends just basic scenes, then take that same footage and try to apply all the different edits to the same footage so you understand why certain cuts work with certain scenes and why some cuts don’t.
This is how you begin the process of eeiting great editing techniques. The choices chabdler examples are great, and I think that they clearly illustrate the cuts that Gael Chandler explains.
However, this book is not for those who wonder how these cuts are actually made. It is more focused towards theory and, if you are looking to get your hands on editing software and achieve editong kind of cuts explained in the book, you better look somewhere else. It becomes difficult to read the sparse text between pictures, when the picture sequences pass onto the next digital page.
